A Priest Shares His Holiness With Visitors

by Lucille Nipoti

Father Conrad Scmitt. S.T.

Fr. Conrad Schmitt, S.T., rarely misses a day of being a notable presence on the holy grounds of the Shrine.  With modest demeanor, this priest has chosen his senior ministry to be centered about what he does best, being available for anyone needing spiritual guidance, or a friendly conversation.  He does it all with a smile.  “His warmth and steadfast presence makes one feel that everything is right with the world,” noted a recent visitor.

As the spiritual leader for the Early Christian Worshipping Community, Fr. Conrad does truly make one feel that everything is right with the world.   His perceptive and caring ways reveal his closeness to God, which also transfers to visitors when he offers evening Masses, or guidance for retreat groups.   His articulate homilies, delivered with gentle persuasion, leave a lasting impression on attendees who walk away understanding a little more than before.

Fr. Conrad began his ministry at the Shrine in 2006 after serving as pastor of parishes in Georgia and Alabama.  He demurs to compliments about seeming to be an old timer without a word, but the gentle way he accepts the words tells much about how he feels about the Shrine and the pilgrims with whom he journeys.  Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Fr. Schmitt entered the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity in 1948 and was ordained in 1955.  After completing his seminary schooling, he attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he received a MBA in Finance.

Father leads a scripture study group on Wednesday nights.  Although firm in his beliefs, he never professes to have all the answers, but has earned the respect from attendees who honor his word and value him for being so approachable. The discussions spark in each person, a deeper insight into the life of Christ.

Those in 12-step programs have found his personal experience helpful in talking with them about the spiritual aspects of these programs.  He also participates in the Days of Reflection Ministry and is available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  An avid reader, his last targeted group of books was mystery classics.  He is now reading anything relating to history – world and US history and enjoys visiting local State Parks and walking along the local boardwalks.

Unique to the Shrine of St. Joseph, the presence of a priest, and in particular, this priest, on site attracts many visitors.  This man has found  a fruitful, retired ministry, dedicated to preserving and strengthening the faith while ministering to the spiritually neglected and abandoned – especially the poor.  Fr. Conrad is indeed special!

Rescued from the rubble, an historic statute of St. Joseph, put aside because no funds were available for its restoration, was recently recovered, and thanks to the generosity of a patron, carefully restored.  It adorned the St. Joseph’s table during  the Shrine’s Triduum to  Saint Joseph in March.
