It
was with humble gratitude that I accepted my new assignment at the Shrine of St.
Joseph. As a Missionary Servant of the Most Holy Trinity, I have fond memories
of visiting the Shrine while I was in the seminary and ministering in nearby
Philadelphia. I look forward to continuing to steer the Shrine of St. Joseph in
its lay-religious collaborative efforts.
I chose the title “Mission Director” to emphasize
that everyone who visits the Shrine is invited to participate in its mission.
The founder of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, Fr. Thomas
Augustine Judge, C.M., reminded us that every Catholic is called to be an
apostle. Therefore, we at the Shrine are blessed to provide opportunities for
all who come to these sacred grounds.
As Mission Director, I encourage everyone here to
find their missionary calling. We hope to ensure our mission will always
respond to the needs of the economically and spiritually abandoned, a
centerpiece of the vision of Fr. Judge.
Speaking of the Shrine family, I am grateful
for the wonderful work of our Priests and Brothers here, especially Fr. Peter J.
Krebs ST, who served as Director for twenty years, his vision laying the
groundwork for our continued future growth. As spiritual leaders the religious
teach and live the Word of God as sacramental ministers, retreat leaders,
confessors and spiritual guides. They guide scripture study, celebrate liturgy
and tend to the needs of the sick, elderly and spiritually abandoned. Several
Priests and Brothers also minister to our immigrant brothers and sisters in the
Diocese of Paterson. The Shrine collaborates with them and hopes to deepen our
relationship as a part of our mission. I am also grateful for the Sister
Servants of Jesus, the lay staff, and the entire Shrine family. The Sisters
tirelessly spread their creative talents over these sacred grounds, operating
our lovely “Gift and Book Shop”, caring for our Shrine chapel and office and
preparing wonderful meals for all occasions. The lay staff sets the tone for
all that we do at the Shrine. Their kind hospitality and love for the Shrine is
witnessed in their efforts, making visits here pleasant and memorable. The
entire family carries the Shrine mission, as they live it in the providence of
their daily lives.
I am excited about this upcoming year. The
Shrine will be emphasizing the three pillars of mission efforts. First, the
Shrine is a sacred space to so many. This sacredness cannot be underestimated,
as it helps us all to be filled with the love, grace and spirit of God which, in
turn, will move us to our missionary calling. Next, missionary spiritual
programming will prepare us for this calling and refine in us the gifts God has
given for the missionary journey. Lastly, the newly developing center for peace
will offer a practical way for us to respond to those areas where the peace of
God needs re-planting. It is one way in which the Shrine will open the doors
for many missionary efforts, here and beyond.
Come! Join with me and the Shrine family as
we embark on this missionary journey together!
