“I feel refreshed and renewed from this program. It made me realize how significant and necessary Peace is in my life.” ~ AW

“The retreat made us look deeply into our hearts and check to see if we have made peace with God and with one another.  The icon was truly beautiful and it made me think about all the evils in today’s society, but it also made me think about all the good that’s in it.” ~ R

“It was a good experience because it helped me see things in a whole different way.”~ K

A Building Bridges To Peace Retreat offers students (ages 8-18 years) a program in developing non-violent approaches to peacemaking.

The Building Bridges To Peace staff will:

  • Help students understand and gain greater awareness of peace issues
  • Help students define how peace is breached within and outside their communities
  • Urge students to respond to dramatic scenarios by working in teams and sharing feedback.

Using various scenarios, discussions, liturgy, reflection and action planning ideas your students will leave with:

*A greater responsibility towards being a peacemaker in school, home and community,

*Nonviolent ways to deal with interpersonal conflicts and

*Strategies to foster ongoing peacemaking learning and actions.

The Shrine of St. Joseph’s Tower of Remembrance and Turning from Violence Icon provides a unique laboratory for parents and teachers to bring their youth to experience a culture of peace.

 Turning from Violence Icon

One feature of the program involves a dialogue before a meditative Icon, “Turning from Violence.” Students give their reactions to this painting that depicts both places and types of violence in contrast to a land of peace and light.  Students are asked to develop action steps and a set of values to carry within as they move forward in life.

The Tower of Remembrance

This memorial combines steel from the World Trade Center North Tower and four bells from the Missionary Servants Most Holy Trinity Seminary. It provides a place of healing, prayer, and peace for those families who lost loved ones on Sept. 11, 2001.  Your students will visit this sacred site and in the midst of the 4,000 names listed here, be able to toll the bell while offering their own prayers for peace.
