VISIT TO POLAND
Ed and Barbara
Golankiewicz, members of the Shrine Family, visited Poland in
October and made a trip to see our Sister Anna, who retired this year.
Ed reports, "I called Sister Anna to tell her
we'd like to see her. We could not come to the Convent. Guess
what! Sister took a taxi and visited us carrying a pink rose. After
a short visit we took her back to the Mother House in all the traffic and
we met Sister Agnes, Mother Superior and a number of Nuns including
Sister Sophia's Ciocia".
Here are some pictures from the visit.

SHRINE PROVIDED HOSPITALITY FOR THE HOMELESS
From October 8 through 15, 2006, the
Shrine provided hospitality, in the auditorium, for some
homeless folks as part of our participation in the Interfaith
Council For The Homeless of Morris County. Several churches in the
Morristown area cooperate in helping people (singles and families)
who are homeless and often jobless find permanent housing and jobs.
While doing this, some need temporary shelter. The different
churches take turns in providing this shelter and this week it is
the Shrine’s turn. While here, all the cooperating churches see
that the folks are fed and have daytime activities for their
children. The Shrine staff is on hand to help with this program.
74th Guild
Convention at Shrine
On Saturday, October 7, 2006,
St. Joseph’s Shrine hosted the 74th annual convention of
the Missionary Servant Guilds. Throughout the year, these groups of
dedicated friends of the Missionary Servants and the Shrine hold
parties and activities to raise funds for the charitable works of
the Shrine and for the missions staffed by the Missionary Servants.
64 members attended the convention which began with an opening Talk
and a Mass celebrated by Father Conrad Schmitt, S.T. Fathers
Stephen Quinn, S.T. and Peter Krebs, S.T. concelebrated. Following
a luncheon in the Shrine auditorium, there was a general meeting at
which Father Peter, S.T., Director of the Shrine, thanked the ladies
for their efforts, the success of which was evident in the financial
report they submitted. Father Peter noted how the funds raised will
benefit the Missionary Servants’ missions and the Shrine. The day
ended with Benediction and a Prayer of Thanksgiving for the members
of the Guilds and the work they do for the missions.
Special thanks were extended
to Mrs. Betty Lawler of the Caldwell Guild (our “Mission Lady”) for
the more than $14,000 she raised during the last year in selling
raffle tickets, used jewelry and sundry items in the Shrine’s
downstairs hallway on the weekends. Mrs. Josephine Megaro was
thanked for her work in organizing the Convention and making the day
such a success.
Represented at the Convention
were: St. Mark’s Guild, Belmar, NJ (Mrs. Betty O’Donnell); St. Maria
Goretti Guild, Bloomfield/West Orange, NJ (Mrs. Ann Lewis); Holy
Spirit Guild, Caldwell, NJ (Mrs. Dolores Landon); St. Joseph Guild,
Elizabeth, NJ (Mrs. Lucille Albowicz); St. Nicholas Guild, Hoboken,
NJ (Mrs. Mary Rej); St. Jude Guild, Maplewood, NJ (Mrs. Theresa
Oriolo); St. Matthew Guild, Maplewood, NJ (Mrs. Irene Colonna);
Sacred Heart Guild, Perth Amboy, NJ (Mrs. Estelle Fizer); St. Bede
Sanctuary Guild, Philadelphia, PA (Mrs. Mary Lawley); and Our Lady
of Guadalupe Guild, Rahway, NJ ( Mrs. Catherine McGuire).

Easter at the Shrine

Father Peter, made a plea at Mass for
hurricane relief donations which we are collecting to be sent to our
OWN Missionary Servant missions in Mississippi
which were either completely destroyed or greatly damaged in Hurricane
Katrina. We have about 9 missions in Mississippi. Father Kent, who comes
from Pearlington, MS, and whose mother still lives there, left
for Mississippi today. He is bringing monies already collected and some
needed supplies for our missions. If anyone wishes to make a donation, they
can make their check out to the Shrine of St. Joseph
earmarked "Katrina Relief." All
donations will go directly to the poor and abandoned that the Missionary
Servants minister to on the Gulf Coast.
More info on Katrina (please click)
Mary Bujak, who regularly attends the 8am Mass, is in a
nursing home. She would like visitors. She is at Berkeley Heights
Convalescent & Rehab Center. 35 Cottage St., Berkeley Heights, NJ Room #
18. Mary does not have a phone in her room. If any of the members of the Shrine
Family could stop buy to see her she would be deeply appreciative.
The Visiting Nurse Association needs Men and Women to
volunteer for their hospice/Home Care program. There is a training portion
and pre-registration is required. For further information, please call the
Visiting Nurses at 908-766-0180. Flyers are available at the back of the Church.
What a wonderful way to serve God through the Beatitudes; reaching out to those
who are lonely and/ or suffering with a illness.
THE SHRINE OF ST. JOSEPH
COMMEMORATED OUR
80th ANNIVERSARY
By Fr. Peter J. Krebs, S.T.,
Director
Details and Photos of our Celebration

I feel humbled to be director of the Shrine of St. Joseph this year
as we celebrate our 80th anniversary.
While
I also served in this post during our 75th anniversary, I see God's blessing
more intensely now. Perhaps it is because of the connectedness to the 9/11
tragedy through our Tower of Remembrance
that makes me realize that our sacred place has also become hallowed ground. Or,
it might be that now we are welcoming a Latino community of immigrants. How they
parallel those for whom Fr. Judge founded the Shrine in 1924!
Perhaps
I see God's blessing now that I am surrounded by a greater member of religious
than at any time in my life, except when I was in the seminary. The enthusiasm
of the young, the wisdom of their elders, the love with which they interact with
one another and the way in which they devote themselves to their ministries, of
which I am witness to every day, is indeed rewarding.
The
Shrine of St. Joseph's mission is about people- those who belong to one of our
three worshipping communities: The Guild women and men who continue to serve the
Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity through their loyalty to the
Shrine; and those people who "go to Joseph", trusting in the compassion,
understanding and acceptance they will find at the Shrine of St. Joseph.
I see our "Shrine Family"
as special folks whom God has directed to these sacred grounds, if not
physically, then in prayer, spiritual and financial support.
The
world has indeed changed since Fr. Judge asked his religious communities to
minister to folks he described as "God's treasures; people bound in their needs
to find God in our times."
Amidst
a number of many wars and continued conflicts, there has been a whirlwind of
technological advances that makes those of us living today economically and
educationally more advanced than our predecessors. But what our world could
never do – nor de we want it to, is to change the gift of God's presence in all
people. I am proud and honored to be a steward of this sacred space in your
name.
THE TOWER OF REMEMBRANCE
The
Tower of Remembrance at the Shrine of St. Joseph was
dedicated on July 13, 2002. Led by Fr. Peter
Krebs, S.T., Director of the Shrine, victims, families, area clergy and the
Shrine staff all took part in the prayerful ceremony dedicating the Tower as an
enduring memorial to all of the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks on
September 11, 2001 on the United States and its people. Click here for
