The 23rd Psalm

One of the most popular psalms, often used in times of trouble or loss is the beautiful 23rd. Like many prayers, we know it well, perhaps too well and we may get lost in the words and lose the true meaning. Father Campion Murphy S.T. presents another version that may inspire different pictures or thoughts in your mind. Give it a read and then compare the two. You may well have new insights.

MY SHEPHERD

The Lord is my shepherd; he meets all my needs.
To fields, lush and soft, he frequently leads.
To sweet springs, serene, often he takes me.
I'm revived and refreshed? he almost re—makes me.

The way is winding, unmarked. I wander; he directs.
The path is narrow, drops off. I waver; He corrects.
The trip seems endless. I'll tire and fade; he'll aid.
When God is my guide, I'm safe by his side.

Into a valley - darkly forbidding,
Hemmed in by heights — starkly foreboding -
Danger and doom could lurk in the gloom.
Will I be afraid when cliffs rise and loom?
No! If I call, he's ready, he'll save.
I trust. No I'm heartened, made steady and brave.

Where goes the road? Why push past their stares?
The Lord waits as host; a feast he prepares.
The treats will be plentiful; and joy will be bountiful.
Beyond the mind's bent, I'll be filled and content.

I might have strayed, alone, lost and scared,
Missing His smile that said that he cared.
Needing His arms around rue, holding me,
Tender, kind, gentle, warmly enfolding me.
So I'll be his lamb and stay all my days
At home in the' flock of the Lord. Give praise!

Father Campion Murphy, S.T.

The Original
The 23rd Psalm - "The Lord is my Shepherd...

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
