Photo & Interview by John W. Leatherdale

Fr. Vincent is currently on his third tour of duty here at the Shrine, most recently starting in 1990.  Fr. Vincent entered the minor seminary at the young age of 13 in 1929 in Alabama, and become a Novice, June 11, 1933.  During his many years in the ministry, he taught Latin and Greek for 24 years in Alabama, and has also served in Lawtell, LA, and Colonial Beach, VA.  During an earlier term at the Shrine, 73-79, he served as Director of Novitiate, then housed in the present Apostolic Center. Fr. Vincent is currently in Sr. Ministry I, and is still engaged in the Shrine ministries.  This includes participation in day and weekend retreats along with various programs of spiritual renewal.

During the summer months, he is the spiritual director for Camp Trinita in Connecticut assisting the Sisters Family Development programs helping poor and troubled families find their way back spiritually.  Trinita is where Fr. Vincent has his workshop in a second floor loft.  He silk-screens all of the camp tee shirts by hand each year, and does other woodworking chores at the camp when the Sisters let him.  Fr. Vincent screened the tee shirts for the Fall Fun Festival last year.

Fr. Vincent’s memories at the Shrine include saying the closing Mass in the ‘Old Barn Chapel’ in 1975, and serving the many wonderful people he has had the opportunity to meet here and work with. He has been greatly inspired by their generosity, and dedication to the Shrine.  His sadder memories are marked by the loss of so many people who had become an important part of his life. His favorite Saints include his personal patron, Vincent dePaul and, of course, St. Joseph.

Fr. Vincent’s personal goals are for continued Scriptural studies and internal Community History.  He is very happy with his position in life.

Fr. Vincent’s birthday is November 30, 1915.
